The place is really quite a thing to see by itself many layers of hills that have been tended to completion and you camp on back side. On one side a ridge line with the actual spring right next to the site. Up the hill a couple hundred feet is another spring that fills the first of many ponds that is the beginning of the permaculture of the agricultural systems they are creating here. A little farther up from the first pond is access to the Pisgah reserve which I had intended to use as base camp for a journey into the wild. Unfortunately I was so eager to start I pulled my back out and most of my trip was in complete pain. The actual place with showers and the tobacco barn and the people that stay there were very nice and accommodating. There are only three stores in town I would go to the one farthest away they are cool as hell there too. So if you get stuck and end up chilling out over there it’s a cool little bodega in town. The scenery really couldn’t have been any better they have built the place as artists and have really incorporated their joy of creation and it really shows. If you are older like me and just need a few days off and want to back pack or just be alone a while. A perfect spot to camp like you are backpacking and be able to backpack from there but have all the luxuries of a park without someone right next door. In fact the only thing right next door is a natural spring!

This is truly an enchanting property! Michael went out of his way to accommodate us. He gave us a quick tour upon arrival and we enjoyed learning about the permaculture techniques and the unique community that is in place here. We had enough room to feel secluded but also enjoyed talking with a few of the community members. The upper fire pit has a great view and we enjoyed sitting by the fire in the morning and evening and enjoying the fall beauty. Truly a unique stay and we will enjoy visiting again in the future.

Enchanted Bell Tent & Music Venue
Our stay at Hawk & Hawthorn was just magical!
Michael was a welcoming host and quick to respond to any messages we sent. Upon arrival we were greeted by many willing community members who made us feel so welcome.
They helped unload our car and bring our bags and Tupperware of kitchen supplies up to the Bell Tent which was located at the top of a little hill. We had a lot of privacy and an amazing view of the valley and property. We then parked our car across the street from the property.
We were so grateful to not drive our car on to the property. It allowed us to drop in deeper to land and shed all the energy of driving and city living.
The bathrooms and shower were fully finished and super nice, not like the compost vault toilets we’ve been used to on this road trip.
The highlight of our stay were the beautiful friendships we made with the people living on the land and attending the Paul Izak concert that was held in the shared barn space. This land is an amazing concert venue! We also enjoyed swimming in the natural spring, hiking to a cave, drinking water from the spring and just hanging and chatting with people in the barn.
Our family hasn’t been this connected to nature, ourselves and each other in a long time. I’m grateful for Hawk and Hawthorn for providing the space to drop in to the healing powers of nature and music.
We will for sure be back!
Blessings and gratitude
