Primitive Camping Retreat

Mawhe Acres Camping Retreat has two primitive camp sites just inside the tree line of an open field, each with a 16' x 16' crushed limestone pad for tents. Each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring and access to a compost toilet (in outhouse). There is no potable water or electric. However, for a nominal fee, we can provide a water hose to the campsite. There's easy access with the ability to drive through the field to the campsite or guests can walk in with their gear from driveway. We're fine with car camping too - we just want to keep things as natural as possible. Mawhe Acres - a 25 acre farm, much of which is raw land and woods in their natural state, undeveloped and not farmed for decades - is an official National Wildlife Federation® (NWF) Certified Wildlife Habitat™ site. NWF recognizes our commitment to sustainably providing the essentials of wildlife habitat - natural sources of food, water, cover and places to raise young. The abundant wildlife around includes deer, squirrels, red foxes, turkeys, chipmunks, groundhogs, raccoons, opossums, woodpeckers, owls, and birds of prey (mostly red-tailed hawks and vultures). We have a small lake with good fishing and acres of woods to explore. There are some footpaths for easier walking. Our beautiful 1800’s cabin was moved to the property in the 1970’s by a former neighbor who owned the property at the time. The same neighbor also had a historic train depot moved to the property where she sold antiques out of for several years. It is not sure what the cabin was used for at that time but it certainly added charm to the antique store property. When we acquired the property years later, the cabin was in need of work. It sat for a few years until we decided to restore this lovely cabin back to it’s beautiful charm and character. Jim spent a couple years on the project working in his free time and added the porch using old wood in keeping with the natural look and feel of the cabin as well as some interior areas. Upon completion, we opened the cabin as a gift shop selling unique items including antiques, primitives and decor for a few years. We decided to transition the cabin into a place of retreat for traveling guests and still keep some of the goods we sold in the shop available for purchase. We hope that you find the cabin and property a place of peace and tranquility and will want to return. Whether passing through for a night or a few days stay, you’re always welcome in our neck of the woods. Catfish Ranch Camp

2 acres with a 1/4 acre fishing pond, stocked with Channel Cat, Crappie, Bluegill and Bass. Although the catfish have eaten everyone out of house and home. I have a few sites available, or set up where you want. A large fire ring area is available. You can fish, you can eat your catch or keep a few. If chicken eggs are available I will make them available to campers. You can visit the chickens and feed the catfish. These are tent sites and you may have to park your vehicle and walk to set up. Firewood is available for use at the site. We are close to several kayaking rental places along the Little Miami River, Morrow and Morgan's are close by. This would be a good spot to tent camp during the famous Todd's Fork Revival Festival in July as we are just 5 minutes from the site. I will probably be going! Mostly surrounded by a horse farm, so you may have an opportunity to see some horses out in the fields next door. Food, gas, etc. is available within 5 mins into town. Peaceful and one great place to see the stars. Sites are first come first serve on location.

Deer Haven

We recently moved from the next county over and are enjoying making this place ours and improvements for guests. Property is 15 minutes south of Cincinnati, close to the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG), close to restaurants and attractions such as Kings Island (approximately 1 hour), Creation Museum (approximately 25 minutes) and The Ark (approximately 25 minutes). Also nearby are several state parks and local favorites such as Big Bone State park, Rabbit Hash,and Riverbend. We have 2 dogs who walk with us on leash and recently added chickens and goats! Elmer and Clyde do like to wander and explore. They are very friendly. Learn more about this land: Gravel driveway leads up to both spots. We do try to keep it maintained, but frequently rain causes ruts faster than we can fill. It should not impede drivability, but use caution and feel free to ask if you have any concerns. #1 improvement planned is paving driveway. You may also experience some vehicle noise from roadway. Typically, as we are on a back road, it is fairly quiet but some drivers may be louder than others and some evenings see more traffic. Level gravel area for RV parking, second plateau available for multiple tent sites. Campfires in designated area. Deer, wild turkeys, opossums and raccoons are plentiful and often wander through. Less common are foxes and bald eagles that make their home at Doe Run Lake nearby. Main home on property but only close enough for assistance, not interference. Homesteading in progress with many improvements being added. Property is close to Creation Museum and the Ark. 10 minutes from restaurants and expressway but feels like a retreat. Wi-fi, trash, private area for camp toilet, fire ring, water, camp stove (available in extras). Optional tent and chair rentals.

Originally built as Lock and Dam 38 in 1926 it is now a nulti family apartmetn property with a large field and plenty of room to camp. Currently there are two sites and a outside community area. Each have a picnic table annd fire ring. You can pull your car right up to your site. Bring your canoe or kayak as wee have access to put yur boat in right on the property. Or fish from the river bank. There is access to the indoor common area where you will find a bathroom with shower and a place to relax or get in from the weather. There are two coin operated laundry rooms and a soda machine onsite as well. This historic location is just 8 minutes to Rabbit Hash, 18 minutes to Big Bone Lick State Park, and 22 minutes to the Creation Museum. Either myself or one of my staff are onsite everyday if you have any questions or concerns.

Ohio River experience

California, Ohio is a community on the Ohio River about a twenty minute drive upstream from Cincinnati. Actually the eastern-most neighborhood of Cincinnati, it has it's own small town or quaint village atmosphere. Safe, flat, scenic and walkable, California boasts several dining experiences, one a brewery, and quite a variety of recreational experiences. Riverbend, a music venue in season, is a mile away, possible walking distance, as is Belterra, a race track and casino. The bike trail is a few blocks away and connects to all the other area bike trails including the Loveland Bike Trail along the Wild and Scenic Little Miami River. A local nature preserve, California Woods, offers hiking and nature programs, and there is even the California Golf Course. If watching baseball leagues play games is your cup of tea, there is a large sports complex with ball fields in California. A town park with trees and large, grassy open spaces and small playground is a few blocks away. Bring your game of horse shoes, corn hole, a frisbee to throw, your skateboard, golf cart, or some bikes just to cruise around and take in the scenery. Nearby, and right the Wild and Scenic Little Miami River is Armleder Park, also with walking and biking trails which also connect to the 5 mile loop around Lunken Airport. I have two properties which offer two different kinds of camping, which I have itemized separately in the Hipcamp listings. RV Campers will park on the upper level at the Panama Street address , and have one set of amenities. It is a short walk lead down to the Ohio River where there is a small patio with table and chairs overlooking the river. Tent campers set up their tents right beside the river and have a different set of amenities, as itemized on this website. It's an unusual set up, as perhaps Hipcamper spots often are. It is interesting and relaxing to watch the barges and pleasure boats go by. On one hand I feel like I am in the middle of nowhere when I am on these (small, very not fancy) properties by the river. On the other, there are planes, trains, barges and pleasure boats, and motorcycles passing by at times. The River can be mesmerizing and serene, shimmering in the western sun, or busy with weekend pleasure boats and barge traffic. Take a walk around town, then sit by the river and watch the boats go by. Relax, set up your grill and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Ohio River. Perfect for river rats. Downtown Cincinnati is 15 or 20 minutes away with no traffic, and there are two or three ways to get there. There is a lot to do in Cincinnati. My place in California is just a few minutes from the I 275 exit.

Todd’s Fork Adventures

We reside within the Village of Morrow, walking distance to restaurants and stores. The little Miami Bike Trail is approximately 1/4 mile from our entrance. This property is tucked away and you wouldn’t even know you’re close to town once you’re on site. Valley Vineyards is right down the road to enjoy a bottle of wine and cook your own steak dinner nights. Take a trip to visit Fort Ancient with a day hike. A Native American earthworks complex, the largest hilltop enclosure in the world and soon to be a World Heritage site! Enjoy some canoeing on the Little Miami River a State and National scenic river which is within walking distance. We have kayaks on location for the kids to play in the creek and creeks to hike with numerous fossils deposits. Southwestern Ohio is famous for its Ordovician fossil deposits. Kings Island is approximately 20 minute drive and the Ohio renaissance Festival is near. Caesars creek state park in Cowan lake state park is within a short drive. Smallmouth Bass fishing is awesome on Todd’s Fork and we have plenty of area to Wade fish.

Experience the best of luxury and relaxation in this secluded canvas tent at Bunker Farm, nestled within the picturesque creekside of the 7-acre farm in Ryland Heights, Kentucky. Step inside this furnished bell tent to discover a spacious retreat complete with a queen size bed. Marshall Road runs through the bottom third of our property making a secluded area along Decoursey Creek that feels like a you're way out in the woods, yet not far from the city. Our canvas tent is situated under large mature trees, secluded from the road. An open field located on the property along Decoursey Creek, which brings in a variety of flora and fauna. This 12 foot canvas bell tent is sure to take relaxation to the next level. Within this tent, a queen size memory foam mattress, lightweight sheets, extra blankets and paired with two firm and two soft pillows are provided. The door way is a double zip closure. For cooking, a gas burner and a small gas grill, a cast iron skillet along with acacia wood plates and bowls, utensils, and knives are available for use. For fresh coffee in the morning, an enamel Percolator and mugs are provided. An extra large cooler (100 gal) for your cold items is available outside of the tent. Please bring your own camping equipment if needing any items outside of what's listed. For your bathroom needs, we are currently building a bath house. It does have a fully functional toilet and sink using water catchment. The shower is not complete, will be in the coming weeks. Please bring water for drinking and brushing teeth. Toilet paper, hand soap and sanitizer will be provided. In addition to firelight from the campfire, the tent is lit by battery-powered a LED lantern, battery operated candles, decor and a pair of solar lamps. No electric is available at this site currently. One battery operated fan is provided. First load of wood is included with your reservation. $7 per bundle if you need more. We use the honor system for this, please send any extra money through HipCamp if more wood is used. We provide fire starting materials and a lighter, fire extinguisher is located in the trunk within the tent. Parking area is close to the tent, yet not right next to it. A large rolling cart is provided to help with getting belongings to and from the parking area. Please only park and drive on graveled area. Creekside Hideaway is nestled on Decoursey Creek, you will have access to the bottom area of the property along the creek. Rock steps have been put in along the creek for easy access down to the creek. This property is partially wooded, and has an open field as well. We are always pet friendly, but you must maintain control of your pets and you are responsible for them at all times. Decoursey creek is a natural waterway. It is frequented by wildlife and can be contaminated by runoff from local farms. DO NOT drink the water. Make sure to wash your hands after they have been in the water before eating and drinking. Pink tape on trees are to mark the approximate property lines, please remain within the property. The creek is part of the property but please do not go to the far bank, as the creek marks our property line.

Cabin and Tent Camping On The River

Pack your essentials and escape to the Little Miami River Valley's best kept secret. Our off-grid cabin and tent campsite is situated on 14 acres along the National and Scenic Little Miami River. Once here, you'll park near our farmhouse on the upper plateau and take a 4 minute hike over the creek, through the meadow, and into the woods. *Driving to the site is an option if you have 4WD and the ground is not too wet. Exceptions for 2WD can be made if the weather forecast and ground conditions permit. As you approach the cabin and campsite/s, the trail opens up to an acre of green space shaded by large Sycamore, Walnut, and other native trees. Take a dip in the river, enjoy people watching as canoeist pass, or take part with a canoe or kayak rental from a nearby business (within 3 miles). The Little Miami Trail is also less than a mile down the road so bring your bike! Our composting outhouse is serviced between each stay, meaning it's emptied, sanitized, and like new for each new guest. There are two established campfire locations and a picnic table is provided along with a few tiki torches. There's plenty of room for tents if additional guests are joining. If interested in having tents provided and set up prior to arrival, see add ons. Add-ons available for additional purchase include bedding (cabin only), a propane grill, tent rental/setup, and firewood. Please note, our cabin site and tent site are the same location. Once one site is booked (e.g. either the tent site or cabin), we'll blackout the dates for the other site option so that you are the only guest/group onsite on any given night.

We have an outhouse for tent campers And water is available by campsite 1 and we have portable idc tote with city water. We also have 3 indoor/outdoor cats, they like to visit the campground.
